CONTROL PROGRAM FOR HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS
The HIV epidemic has come to symbolise an
unfathomable tragedy in the previous three decades. The devastating
effects of HIV and AIDS have already claimed millions of lives,
caused suffering and loss, stoked dread and uncertainty, and raised
the prospect of total economic collapse.
HIV/AIDS
The
second-largest nation in South Asia, Pakistan, is just slightly
behind India and Nepal in terms of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The country
has really shifted from a low prevalence to a concentrated epidemic,
with HIV prevalence of more than 5% among injecting drug users (IDUs)
in at least eight major cities, despite several efforts to reduce the
HIV infection rate, which has climbed considerably over the previous
few years.
The threshold level appears to be approaching for other high-risk categories as well, including hijra sex workers, female sex workers, and men who have sex with men (MSM). Nearly five million members of the bridging populations have direct sexual contact with these groups and are hence at risk of HIV transmission through unprotected sexual activity. HIV might spread quickly to marriage partners or sex customers and cause a widespread pandemic due to the variety and interlinking of high risk injecting and sexual activity, poor levels of HIV understanding and prevention, and high levels of other STIs.
